The Love You Don't Notice in Your Soul ! : Ocean Waves (1993) - Review

For those not interested in the slow pacing, slice-of-life style of film A Silent Voice, the movie is dull and far too monotonous. The presentation gives you just enough room to tell the story you want to tell; anything extra will just be empty space. It tells the story of two high school buddies who get estranged from one another due to a girl and their closest friend. Although the plot isn't particularly original, Ocean Waves does a beautiful job of telling the story with a sense of warmth and nostalgia that shifts the balance, with a little humor thrown in for good measure.

In it, a college student attends his high school reunion while visiting his beachfront house. Nevertheless, we also see how Taku and Matsuno first became friends, years before, as they connect over their shared opposition to the politics of the school. The primary plot takes place two years ago, when Rikako moves out. Cancellation of a School Trip Due to the kids' poor marks, their trip to Kyoto is postponed, and they are informed that going forward, each student would only be allowed to take one trip during their time in school.

Of her class, only Matsuno is Rikako's buddy, primarily because of his attraction to her. Rikako does not want to live in a small town. Taco is shown as a lovely guy to get to know, but he doesn't interact with her until after their trip to Hawaii, when she loses her money and begs him for a loan even though she knows he runs a business. Tako ends up traveling to Tokyo with her for the upcoming school break since it turns out she has ulterior motivations as a result of a challenging home life.

The lovely film Ocean Waves offers a contemplation on historical events, the complete futility of youth, and the sweet intoxication of love. Yet the picture won't be as as good as it was initially recognized for those looking for elements of action and fantasy like Studio Ghibli films. The kind of love story you don't even recognize is a love story until after the fact, first and foremost, a drama in a minor note. The most significant fact, though, is that she still looks stunning twenty years later.

Compared to their other fantasy movies, Ocean Waves wasn't quite as popular, but it is still a charming film in its own right.
